CeBIT 2012: PDF Association Has the Answers to Your Questions About PDF Standards and Solutions

Seeking expert advice on PDF standards like PDF/A, PDF/VT, PDF/UA and PDF/X? The PDF Association, an International PDF standards group, will be offering its expertise in current and future PDF standards at CeBIT 2012. Our experts will be on-hand to answer questions and provide standards-compliant solutions for all PDF formats.

With a particular focus on “Managing Trust”, CeBIT 2012 will be putting the spotlight on issues of protection and security in the digital world. PDF has an important role to play in this debate as it can influence the efficiency of linked processes and operational divisions in a variety of ways. In a world where security breaches are daily news, enterprises are coming to the conclusion that it is important to adhere to ISO standards, especially when dealing with popular file types such as PDF.

PDF/A in particular has established itself as a long-term archiving format; many businesses and public institutions are implementing PDF/A for strategic purposes in their core business and as a general requirement in IT projects. This inevitably results in numerous, complex questions about carrying out specific, individual PDF projects. The PDF Association’s experts can provide comprehensive support and complete explanations, including uses for the various PDF/A standards. For example, we can demonstrate fields of application for PDF/UA (Universal Accessibility) or explain how PDF/VT (V for Variable Data Printing, T for Transactional Printing) can optimize output management processes.

“The PDF standards field is constantly changing, creating a real need for education and information,” explains Olaf Drümmer, chairman of the PDF Association board. “The growing significance of PDF as a completely open digital document format means that future standards need to reflect current business and compliance requirements.”

The standards continue to evolve; some noteworthy developments include:

  • The PDF standard itself (ISO 32000) is an important milestone. In handing over control of the PDF format to the ISO, Adobe gave the international PDF community the opportunity to shape the future development of the PDF within the ISO’s framework, with Adobe’s continuing involvement in the process.
  • The still relatively new PDF/VT standard is gaining increasing influence in the output management sector. It is intended for high-volume printing with a particular need to preserve documents’ aesthetic appeal. PDF/VT is based on the PDF/X standard, which has been in widespread use in the printing industry for a decade, and adds new performance features that are indispensable for output management.
  • PDF/UA is now close to publication. The international standard for universally accessible PDF is important for organizations that are required to adhere to accessibility directives (including Section 508 in the USA, Canada’s “Common Look and Feel Standard” and the Disability Discrimination Act (DDA) in the United Kingdom). PDF/UA provides the features that standards such as WCAG 2.0 and the German equivalent BITV 2.0 have already achieved in the online world; clear specifications for ensuring effective accessibility, not just for websites but for PDF files too. PDF/UA is currently in the DIS (Draft International Standard) stage and is expected to be published in mid-2012.
