Participating in the PDF Techniques Accessibility Summit

The PDF Techniques Accessibility Summit’s objective is to establish a broad-based understanding of how PDF files should be tagged for accessibilty. It’s an opportunity to focus on establishing a common set of examples of accessible PDF content, and identify best-practice when tagging difficult cases.

Modernizing PDF Techniques for Accessibility

The PDF Techniques Accessibility Summit will identify best-practices in tagging various cases in PDF documents. Questions to be addressed will likely include: the legal ways to tag a nested list, the correct way to caption multiple images, the appropriate way to organize content within headings.

Refried PDF

My hospital emailed me a medical records release form as a PDF. They told me to print it, fill it, sign it, scan it and return it to the medical records department, in that order. In 2018? To get the form via email (i.e., electronically), yet be asked to print it? Did the last 20 years just… not mean anything! So I thought I’d be clever. I’d fill it first, THEN print it. Or better yet, never print it, but sign it anyhow, and return it along with a note making the case for improving their workflow. The story continues…

Using PDF/UA in accessibility checklists

PDF/UA, like PDF itself, is internally complex, but used correctly, actually makes things easier.

PDF/A Competence Center Expands to an Association

September 14, 2006 (Berlin) – PDF/A, the new ISO standard for long-term archiving, is generating a great deal of interest on the market. To handle the high demand for information and exchange experience on all aspects of PDF/A, the PDF/A Competence Center has now been reorganized as an association. The founding companies include callas software GmbH, Compart Systemhaus GmbH, LuraTech Europe GmbH, PDF Tools AG (Switzerland) and PDFlib GmbH.

This provides interested parties with the combined expertise of leading PDF/A suppliers. Activities of the newly founded association will include conducting seminars, cooperation on further standardization and serving as a competent point of contact for questions regarding all aspects of PDF/A.

At the beginning of the year already, PDF Tools AG and Lura Tech Europe GmbH founded the PDF/A Competence Center and conducted three seminars on the subject of PDF/A. “The interest in PDF/A was and continues to be so great that we decided to team up with other companies to form an association,” said Thomas Zellmann, executive chairman of the PDF/A Competence Center.

The activities are divided into the areas of cooperation on ISO standardization, conducting seminars, building a Web site with a range of information and recruiting additional members.

Cooperation on ISO standardization
The members of the PDF/A Competence Center are technically oriented and are represented in the ISO committee. They contribute actively to the advancement of the PDF/A standard.
The products of the providers represented were tested for mutual compatibility to ensure high technical quality. Furthermore, it is planned to make test suites available to other suppliers and enable compatibility testing.

Events on the PDF/A standard
To address the high demand for information about PDF/A on the market, the PDF/A Competence Center will continue to hold periodic professional seminars at various locations.

The next seminar will take place the days before the start of the DMS EXPO in Cologne. This enables participants to combine the seminar visit conveniently with a trip to the trade show.

Additional seminars will be held on November 6th in Munich and November 16th in Berlin.

Web site and information
The PDF/A Competence Center has set up the Web site www.pdfa.org to provide interested parties with a central point of contact for information. This includes comprehensive information on the topic and additional links regarding the ISO standard. In addition to that, interested parties can address questions to the PDF/A Competence Center, for which they will receive either a comprehensive answer or information for a competent contact person.

Attracting new members
The PDF/A Competence Center wants to involve further members. The association is directed at providers of PDF solutions and at companies involved with PDF/A in the fields of DMS and ECM as well as interested individuals and user who would like to apply PDF/A in their organizations. An initial member attracted is the well-known DMS/ECM consulting firm Zoeller & Partner GmbH.

Moreover, the association is international in focus, and as of next year its activities will be expanded beyond the German-speaking regions. The first PDF/A conference is planned for February 2007.

PDF/A is the ISO 19005 standard for long-term archiving in PDF format. It comprises a limited variant of PDF, a standard for the use of PDF in long-term archiving. The standard specifies in detail what content is allowed and what is not. These and other specifications are intended to ensure long-term readability of the documents regardless of the application software and operating system in which they were originally produced. Experts predict that the designation of PDF/A as an ISO standard will promote the popularity of that format, and advantages such as full text search capabilities will lead to it replacing TIFF in the near future.

PDF/A Competence Center
