Participating in the PDF Techniques Accessibility Summit

The PDF Techniques Accessibility Summit’s objective is to establish a broad-based understanding of how PDF files should be tagged for accessibilty. It’s an opportunity to focus on establishing a common set of examples of accessible PDF content, and identify best-practice when tagging difficult cases.

Modernizing PDF Techniques for Accessibility

The PDF Techniques Accessibility Summit will identify best-practices in tagging various cases in PDF documents. Questions to be addressed will likely include: the legal ways to tag a nested list, the correct way to caption multiple images, the appropriate way to organize content within headings.

Refried PDF

My hospital emailed me a medical records release form as a PDF. They told me to print it, fill it, sign it, scan it and return it to the medical records department, in that order. In 2018? To get the form via email (i.e., electronically), yet be asked to print it? Did the last 20 years just… not mean anything! So I thought I’d be clever. I’d fill it first, THEN print it. Or better yet, never print it, but sign it anyhow, and return it along with a note making the case for improving their workflow. The story continues…

Using PDF/UA in accessibility checklists

PDF/UA, like PDF itself, is internally complex, but used correctly, actually makes things easier.

Technical Conference 2012 of the PDF Association · March 27-28, 2012 · Basel, Switzerland

The PDF Association invites its members to attend the Technical Conference 2012, to be held March 27-28, 2012 in Basel (Switzerland).

In line with its title the Technical Conference covers technical topics around PDF and related ISO standards and technologies. With a technical audience in mind – developers, technical product managers as well as technical decision makers – the conference provides an update on the latest developments in the world of PDF, and at the same time offers a platform for discussions and networking.

As can be seen from the conference program below, recognized experts will offer their take on the state of affairs of all PDF standards – from PDF/A and PDF/VT over PDF/X, PDF/E, PDF/UA up to PDF itself. They will not only share their knowledge but also provide insight based on their own development work.

Registrations are taken on a first come first served basis. The fee for attending the conference is 100 EUR for members, and 2000 EUR for non-members. In order to register and to reserve your seat please go the the Registration page.

For those unable to attend in person we will provide remote access through a web conferencing. Remote access will be free of charge, but will only be available to members of the PDF Association. More details about attending the Technical Conference 2012 remotely will be provided to members of the PDF Association by early February 2012.

A few things to be aware of when planning for the conference…

The conferences will last two full days. It is recommended to travel to Basel the evening before the conference, and to be prepared to leave the venue at Basel no earlier than 17:30. Trains from Basel SBB to Zürich Airport take about 1:15h and run at least twice per hour. Getting from Zürich Airport train station to the check-in counters takes 10 to 15 minutes.

The conference will take place in the “Altstadt” (Old Town) of Basel at Barfüsserplatz 6. Here is a list of hotels in walking distance:
